Truckload vs. Pallet vs. Case Lot: Which Buying Level Is Right for You?
NorthBay Liquidation Team · 2026-08-28
From a single pallet to a full truckload — how buying volume changes pricing, risk, and logistics, and how to know when to scale up.
The Three Levels of Bulk Buying
Liquidation inventory is sold at three scales. Understanding what changes at each level helps you buy at the right size for your business today — and know when you are ready to move up.
Level 1: Single Pallets
A single pallet is the entry point: one manifested lot, one freight delivery, a manageable amount of inventory. This is where most resellers start and where many stay profitably for years.
- Capital needed: hundreds to low thousands of dollars
- Storage: a garage or small storage unit
- Risk: low — one manifested lot is easy to evaluate
- Best for: beginners, side businesses, testing new categories
Level 2: Multi-Pallet Orders
Buying two to ten pallets at once usually unlocks better per-pallet pricing and spreads one freight delivery across more inventory. The key difference from a single pallet is operational: you need more space, more listing time, and enough working capital to wait out the longer sell-through.
- Capital needed: low to mid thousands
- Storage: a large garage, storage unit, or small warehouse bay
- Risk: moderate — diversified across lots
- Best for: established resellers with proven sell-through rates
Level 3: Truckloads
A truckload is typically 22–26 pallets. Per-unit costs drop to the lowest available, but everything else scales too: you need a commercial receiving address or a plan for a full trailer, real warehouse space, and either a sales team or very efficient systems. Truckload buyers are usually retailers, exporters, flea-market operators with multiple booths, or resellers with warehouse operations.
- Capital needed: five figures
- Storage: warehouse space with dock or forklift access
- Risk: higher absolute dollars, though lower per unit
- Best for: full-time operations with distribution already working
How to Know When to Scale Up
Move up a level when all three are true:
- Your current inventory sells through in a consistent, predictable time
- You have storage and handling capacity sitting idle
- You have capital that is not needed as a safety reserve
Scaling before those are true turns a good business into a stressful one.
