How to Read a Pallet Manifest Before You Buy

NorthBay Liquidation Team · 2026-06-19

A manifest tells you exactly what is on a pallet. Learn how to read item lists, quantities and retail values so you never buy blind.

Why the Manifest Is the Most Important Part of a Listing

A pallet manifest is the itemized inventory list for a lot: every product, the quantity of each, and usually the retail price. Buying a pallet without a manifest is gambling. Buying with one is a business decision. This guide shows you how to read a manifest like a professional buyer.

The Three Columns That Matter

Every manifest on our listings shows three things per line:

  1. Item — the product name, usually with the model or style. For tools, this means the exact kit or bare tool. For footwear, the model and size run.
  2. Quantity — how many units of that item are on the pallet.
  3. Retail price — the item's typical retail price, which adds up to the pallet's total retail value.

The total retail value at the bottom tells you the ceiling of what the pallet could gross if every item sold at full retail. Your real number will be lower — which brings us to the next step.

From Retail Value to Realistic Revenue

Experienced buyers apply a sell-through discount to the manifest total. A common planning range:

  • High-demand brands (Milwaukee, DEWALT, Nike, Jordan, Dyson): items commonly resell at 60–80% of retail when new in box.
  • Mid-demand brands: plan for 40–60%.
  • Slow or niche items: 25–40%, and longer holding time.

Multiply the manifest total by a conservative percentage, subtract your pallet cost and any platform fees (eBay and Amazon take roughly 13–15%), and you have a realistic profit estimate before you spend a dollar.

Red Flags When Reading Manifests

  • No manifest at all. If a seller cannot tell you what is on the pallet, walk away.
  • Vague line items. "Assorted tools" is not a manifest entry. "Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2 in. Drill/Driver Kit" is.
  • Quantities that do not add up. The line quantities should sum to the advertised piece count.
  • Retail prices that look inflated. Spot-check two or three items against a major retailer's website.

How to Verify a Manifest After Delivery

When your pallet arrives, check it against the manifest before you list anything for sale:

  1. Count the total pieces.
  2. Check off each line item and quantity.
  3. Inspect packaging condition item by item.
  4. Report any damaged, defective, or incorrect items within 48 hours of delivery — this window matters, so unbox promptly.

Putting It Into Practice

Open any of our pallet listings and scroll to the manifest table. Practice the math: total retail value, a conservative resale percentage, minus the pallet price. When the numbers work for your market, that pallet is a buy. If you ever want detail on a specific lot beyond what the manifest shows, contact us before ordering.
